mr. flu bug still ahead of the game … 32 days and counting …

I was prattling around. Funny that I have weird ‘windows’ of being in the pink of health; 10-ish to about 12 both ante- and post- meridiem. So anyways, I was just about to type: today is mr. flu bug’s birthday … but then it hit me … hang on. a birthday has a 12-month cycle. God forbid I should be well tucked in under 6 feet by then, if it is in fact mr. flu bug’s birthday.
About noon, Val and I were just mucking around over Instant Messenger that we will celebrate mr. flu bug’s successful 1-month invasion and residence with a huge yummilicious sundae … and here I am hours later, sitting at the hospital’s A&E lobby, back of my hand all bruised up, pricked and fixed up for saline and whatever else intravenously (again!) … waiting patiently for the blood work results before they decide where I shall be chilling my lungs out for the night.
This oseltamivir phosphate (aka Tamiflu) is something. It sure knows how to stir things up.
First 48 hours is a bitch but the doctors will tell you that the side effect, if any (operative word here), will be something one should be mildly alarm off. Just eat and you’d be fine.

Well, bollocks!

Besides having just seen the light of live after the 48-hours, I read the fine prints. Well, like all important information that could either save your life {fatally or financially}, its in super fine fonts after a whole host of the not so important stuff like:
  • Composition
  • Description
  • Structural Chemical Formula
  • Pharmacology
  • Indications
  • Contraindications
  • blah blah blah
The part that really tickled my fancy is on page 4 of 4: neuropsychiatric events. Yup, the bit about hallucinations, delirium and abnormal behaviour, in some cases resulting in fatal outcomes.

But seriously, it is ok. Just something to be mildly concern since it is written this small: neuropsychiatric eventsoseltamivir phosphate may cause hallucinations, delirium and abnormal behaviour, in some cases resulting in fatal outcomes as a side effect.
And really, what’s the concern? I’m neither a Japanese nor am in Japan at the present moment. Are you? So, nothing of real concern since most of the neuropsychiatric events were from post marketing reports originating from Japan and the manufacturers and testers of oseltamivir phosphate do not have enough data to comment further.
Besides, we are further persuaded to relax and sweep the above under the carpet as it happens in settings of encephalitis or encephalopathy … {read further} or without obvious severe disease.

Anyways I am H1N1 negative.
Heck, all my blood work came out negative to date and given that guys in white coats lacks (a) humour (b) creativity (c) innovation (d) … gosh, they are plain bores, ok … I have been put under oseltamivir phosphate along with other interesting medication because smart arse me have ‘caught’ them by asking:
why the heck are all of you pumping me with a total of 4 courses of antibiotics when I have flu, not cold {pause for the Penelope dramatic effect}. Influenza IS a virus? At this rate of diagnosis, I might as well buy a Slurpee machine for my dear friend, mr. flu bug…

Since we have established the white coats are (a) and (d), I don’t think anyone got my Slurpee machine sarcasm/joke. As for oseltamivir phosphate it’s probably the ‘hottest’ antiviral treatment for influenza on the dispensary’s shelf.
